SIOUX FALLS CHRISTIAN / LIBERTY BARBELL

Sioux Falls Christian Charger Powerlifting
2026–2027

Middle School & High School

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

STRENGTH. TECHNIQUE.
TEAMWORK.

Our goal is to create a competitive, supportive training atmosphere that gives students another athletic opportunity while developing strength and technique that complement other sports.

HOW POWERLIFTING WORKS

  • Competitions may be sanctioned or unsanctioned. Athletes compete in the squat, bench press, and deadlift, in that order.
  • Each athlete receives three attempts per lift. The best successful attempt from each lift is added to determine the athlete’s total.
  • Athletes compete in divisions organized by gender and weight class (10 weight classes noted in the program overview).
  • Three judges evaluate each lift; a majority decision determines whether the lift counts.
  • South Dakota high school competition uses classic lifting; belts, knee sleeves, and wrist wraps are the permitted supportive equipment listed for the program.
  • Meets run in flights, with all athletes completing squats before the bench press and then the deadlift.

PREPARING FOR THE SEASON

ATHLETE ESSENTIALS.

Safety & progression. Powerlifting takes place in a controlled, non-contact environment. Coaching will emphasize sound technique, appropriate progression, and consistent training habits.

Footwear. Bring clean training shoes to help keep the gym clean. Flat, minimally cushioned shoes with little heel elevation are recommended (for example, Chuck Taylor–style or barefoot-style shoes). Shoes may be left at Liberty Barbell. Training in socks only is not permitted.

Belts. Loaner lifting belts are available. Athletes may purchase their own, but it is not required; please discuss options with the coach before investing.

Competition clothing. Athletes wear shorts and T-shirts at local middle school and high school meets. Meet shirts are provided, and a team store is expected to open in mid-November.

Training approach. Early-season sessions include squat, bench press, and deadlift on all three training days, with technique taking priority over the amount of weight lifted. Programming will evolve throughout the season.

Nutrition & recovery. Consistent nutrition supports performance and recovery. Chocolate milk is one convenient post-workout option and is available in the Liberty Barbell cooler.

Supplements. Questions about supplements can be discussed individually with the coach; families are encouraged to seek qualified guidance before use.

Phones & spectators. No phones during training. Parents are welcome to observe practices.
